SANCTIFICATION:
Introduction: This is a very important but little taught subject today. Heb 12:14
IN regeneration our nature is changed.
IN justification our standing is changed.
IN adoption our position is changed.
IN sanctification our character is changed.
Sanctification shows the fruit of a justified life. We need to be sanctified because our Savior was sanctified.
1. By the Father John 10:36
2. By His people I Pet. 3:15
3. Sanctification is the will of God for EVERY BELIEVER. I Thess. 4:3
I. The meaning of Sanctification:
Sanctification means to be set apart by God, for God, from sin, unto a holy life.
II Tim. 2:21
Many Christians fall away because they are not willing to be sanctified and then become castaways. I Cor. 9:19-27.
II. The Bible speaks of sanctifying the tabernacle; its contents, men, buildings, firstborn, temple, priest, and a nation.
Ex. 40:9-11 Lev. 27:14-16 Num. 8:18
But for Christian believers, it carries a twofold meaning
A. Separation from evil. II Chr. 29:5, 15-18 II Cor.6:14-18
B. Separation unto God. Lev. 27:16
III. The Author of Sanctification (the Trinity)
A. By the Father. I Thess. 5:23-24
B. By the Son. Eph. 5:26
C. By the Holy Ghost. II Thess. 2:13
IV. The Means of Sanctification
A. By the Word of God. John 17:17. To be sanctified a person must spend time with the Word of God. In the New Testament there are 21 lists of sins with a total of 202 sins of which 103 are different.
B. By the blood. Heb 13:12. The Word of God reveals sin; the blood cleanses it away. The result is Sanctification.
C. By Chastisement – Heb. 12:10-11
D. By yielding- Rom. 6:19
E. By ourselves – II Cor. 7:1
We too have a part in sanctification. Our part is seeking out the sin, judging it and casting it away.
V. The time of Sanctification:
It is both instantaneous and progressive.
A. Instantaneous I Cor. 6:11
B. Progressive James 1:22-25
C. Complete and final I Thess. 5:23
I John 3:2
Phil. 3:12-14
VI. The Reason for our Sanctification:
A. It is the nature of Christianity
I John 3:1-12 II Pet. 3:18 Rom. 6:11-22
VII. The Result of Sanctification:
A. The fruit of Holiness – Rom. 6:22
